Princess Costume
Princess Costume
I was beginning to worry that my daughter was going to grow up being a complete tomboy. If you look at her now, you can already tell that she is going to be a knockout when she gets older. Though I was a tomboy myself when I was growing up, there was a part of me that loved being a girl. I was worried that my daughter did not have this gene, but recently she has really shown me that she does. When we went shopping the other day, she begged and pleaded for a princess costume. We have not gotten one yet, but I'm going to get her one very soon
She wants a princess costume because she recently got a ballet dance mat for Christmas. She loves the idea of being a princess, and I for one am glad that she does. While I believe some children are spoiled to the point where they really believe that they are a princess, I believe my daughter is rather levelheaded. Her imagination has taken her many places, and a princess costume is just one of the latest things that she has asked for. I feel pretty confident that she is interested in many things, and being a princess is just one on a long list of things in her imagination.
The more I think about it, the more I think I would like to make her a princess costume. I have seen the ones in the stores, and I do not believe they are worth thirty dollars. They seem to be made of cheap material, and even though they represent almost an exact replica of what my daughter may see in the movie, I still do not believe that they are worth the money. I think a princess costume would be much more fun if it were made of material that will last longer than a few weeks. I may have to go out and buy all the pieces separately, but that is something that I prepared to do for her.
I think that her princess costume will be a small part of something bigger. I understand that her imagination is probably one of the most important things that I can nurture right now. You can not get by in any part of your life without an amazing imagination. I don't care if you are an accountant or work on computers, you need a fair amount of imagination for problem solving purposes. I think I want to get her a dress up trunk full of clothes that she may use for play. The princess costume will be just one of many outfits she will find inside.

Smurf Costume
Nowadays, it seems like many parents are too busy to really take the time to do the things that parents should do for their children. I'm not talking about driving them to school, going to parent teacher conferences, talking to them about drugs, or even making dinner. I'm talking about the things that go a little bit beyond that. With Halloween coming around, my thoughts turn to children's Halloween costumes. My mom never knew how to make a costume for kids. She would buy us costumes that looked pretty sharp, but she would never take the time to really help us make them ourselves. I know that it is a small thing, but I've tried to be more involved in this aspect of my kids lives.
This year, I made my little daughter Stacey a Smurf costume. She had been listening to the Smurf theme song nonstop for a week. When I asked her what she wanted for her Halloween costume, she could not decide. She is a little bit too young, and sometimes indecisive. I told her I had the perfect idea, but would not tell her what it was. I started working on the Smurf costume that very day.
Making Smurf costumes is a little bit tricky. You would think a Smurf costume would be an easy thing, until you really start on the work. It is much more than a blue outfit with white shoes and white hands. Of course, you can make it recognizable as a Smurf costume without putting in that much effort, but if you want to really make a bang up costume, it takes a lot of work. I actually had to make her a whole papier-mÃf¢chÃf© mask! It took me hours and hours to make the puffy hands, the puffy feet, and the little round blue belly. Finally, however, I had it done!
Needless to say, she was ecstatic about the Smurf costume. Not only did she wear it on Halloween, but she wore it the next day, and the day after that. She was so proud of it that she would've worn that Smurf costume for the whole weekend if I had not stopped her. I made her a deal that she could wear it when she got home from school. I did not want the other kids to be jealous of her, so I would not let her keep wearing it in school. After all, it was a great Smurf costume.

Star Trek Costume
Star Trek Costume
As every self-respecting Trekkie knows, everything is in the detail and it's this that brings the world of science fiction alive. The Star Trek costume department is just as important as the art direction or the props department. The Star Trek fan conventions are a great excuse to get dressed up as a starship captain, or a Vulcan or a Klingon. In addition to life forms from other planets, there are the uniforms of the Starfleet of the United Federation of Planets.
Starfleet's enlisted ranks and officers all have to be clothed throughout each TV series and movie. The different incarnations need to achieve a sense of continuity but with an individual identity too. The original television series, titled Star Trek, from the mid-1960s was noted for the shortness of the skirts worn by the female personnel. Some time after the show was cancelled, movies were made and other TV series followed. Star Trek costume evolved over the years.
In Star Trek: the Next Generation, the ship's doctor, Dr Beverley Crusher would emphasize her medical separateness by wearing a blue coat over her uniform. The Star Trek costume worn by the crew was changed from spandex fabric to wool in response to the actors' complaints that it was uncomfortable. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, set on a space station instead of a space craft, made a departure in wearing uniforms that were almost all black. All other Trek versions have uniforms of different colored tops to indicate the departments, e.g. Engineering, Security, Science and Medical and Command.
The uniforms on Star Trek: Voyager did not change in their seven year voyage. This was because the crew was trapped in a distant quadrant and without contact with Starfleet Command. The final TV series, Star Trek: Enterprise is a prequel to all the others. Deep space exploration is still relatively new and the uniforms reflect that. Their design is less futuristic and is modeled on a flight suit closer to our own times. A desert uniform was introduced, with khaki pants for camouflage.
Starfleet ranks are based on those of the US Navy and Starfleet uniforms indicate rank by braiding, usually of a gold color and by insignia. These ranks range from the lowly Ensign up to the Fleet Admiral. Dress uniform is worn by senior officers for formal occasions, such as meeting dignitaries from other planets or for court martials. The Star Trek costume is one more area where the anorak fan can display his or her outstanding knowledge on the inner world of Star Trek.
