Medieval Costume

Have you decided yet what you want to be this Halloween? I know, I know; decisions decisions. The good news is that our current costume choice is phenomenal. I can hardly decide what I want to go as. My wife wants me to be Count Dracula and my daughter wants me to be a scary werewolf like she is. Personally I don't think either sound ideal. One thing I do know is I want whatever costume I choose to be authentic and original. You know, not one of those tacky get-ups that half your town is traipsing around in. I want to stand out on this spooky night of ghouls, ghosts and goblins. Maybe I should find a medieval costume and go as a knight or one of those brutal hooded savages that do the dirty work for the king. Either way, I definitely know where I'm going to find my unique costume.

Last Halloween I saw a great variety of costumes. You name it, I spotted it. A Superman costume, The Crow, The Matrix, Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, Bart Simpson, a medieval costume, and even a condom. Yes, I know it sounds bizarre. However, if you plan on venturing down Franklin Street, Chapel Hill on Halloween night, then you'd better plan on seeing some funky and risque stuff. After all, it is a college town, which means it's jam packed with college students. Not to mention all the other folks that draw in from far and wide. Now, don't get me wrong. There's no bigger bash than Halloween night on Franklin Street. You can meet tons of cool people and just take in all the madness. But I will warn you; find an outstanding get-up. If you want to wear a medieval costume, then go for it. But make it amazing. There is a great deal of competition down there and you've got to be on top of your game.

If you want to find a great medieval costume locally, I can't help you. However, if you're ready to join the present, then it's as easy as pie. Pop open that Mac or Dell notebook. Google search for a medieval costume or any costume for that matter. If it is available somewhere, then you will find it on the web. And don't be afraid to concoct your own medieval costume. Find a variety of products and attire online to throw together your own unique outfit. This way it will be totally yours.

Do you think you've done every party theme there is? Here's a great idea for a party that will capture the imaginations of your guests and have them talking about it for months later. That would be the Medieval costume party. This one is a lot of fun for you to plan, as well as for your guests to enjoy.

Medieval times were, in a sense, a romantic period in history, though not always peaceful. There was a certain gracefulness to life, where the lady of the house always had a medicinal herb garden to care for her family in illness and season foods in artful ways. Medieval dress varied with your station in life, from simple garments to elaborate visions of finery for the wealthy. When we think of medieval costume, we generally think of the finer end of the spectrum.

In Medieval times, people were much closer to the earth and their relationship to nature than we are today. In Medieval Europe, more than 90% of the people farmed the land. The humblest peasant in the village had his small piece of land to work. Village peasants had, of necessity, a community spirit and would help one another with larger tasks such as plowing. The wealthy landowners would provide the village as well as their own family with medicinal herbs the lady of the house grew and maintained.

The Medieval costume party can be played to the hilt, with each guest bringing their own costume, and you providing the Medieval setting, with table decorations, goblets and trenchers (plates) and, yes, even Medieval dishes.

The Medieval costume is not such a problem as you might think. Your guests can choose whatever style of Medieval dress they wish. Women may enjoy making such a costume, as a Medieval costume is unique in many ways to your usual fashions. You can rent a Medieval costume and jewelry from a costume rental shop.

When planning your party, locate a couple of costume shops to give your guests a starting point. Go to the library and check out a book describing table settings to help you create your party setting. Try to approximate the tone of what your book describes. There are some excellent picture books available which focus on details of Medieval costumes and table settings, kitchen tools, wall decorations and such, which should help you recreate an authentic Medieval feeling.

Your library should also have Medieval cookbooks, with original recipes modified for availability of modern equivalent ingredients. For example, galangal, used frequently in Medieval recipes isn't easily available, but ginger may be substituted for a close match. Medieval sauces were, of necessity, highly seasoned and generally delicious. Where else would you be a served a roast beef with a cinnamon seasoned gravy? Incidentally, this unusual combination is spectacular.

With your dÃffÃ,©cor and menu set, time for your invitations. A calligraphy pen and some parchment paper sets the tone for your Medieval costume party, sure to be a success.

Is it October 31st yet? Well, I guess Halloween is not quite here just yet, but you'd better believe it will pop up in no time at all. That's the way all these holidays work. You think to yourself, I've got plenty of time, but the truth is you don't. This means you'd better getting cracking on that Halloween costume and I mean right now. If you put it off another day, you just may forget altogether. We wouldn't want that now would we? This goes double for all you parents out there. The children need their costumes far in advance. This is simply to ensure that you acquire the correct one. Hey, this stuff is a very big deal when you're little. So, are you ready for some convenient browsing? Are you ready to check out that werewolf, vampire, demon, Michael Myers, Scooby doo, fairy, or mermaid costume yet? So get on your PC already.

I found out the hard way that it's not easy to find particular costumes. Especially when it's getting close to Halloween. I know, I know; this should be a big DUH. However, I simply assumed that there were thousands of costumes to sort through and select from. After all, we're talking about the World-Wide-Web here. Cyberspace is virtually loaded with anything and everything. The last thing I ever expected was for something to be sold out. Now for the bad part. Last Halloween my youngest daughter was wanting a mermaid costume. Hey, no problem at all, right? I could just pop open my Mac and go to town. I had all the confidence in the world. Sadly I waited until October 21st. This was such a massive mistake on my part. Most people had already acquired their Halloween costumes by that time. And how many little girls out there do you think wanted a mermaid costume? My guess is a freaking lot. I could not find a mermaid costume in her size to save my life. This was such a disappointment for her. Anyway, this year I took a different route. I got on the web in August, searching for a decent costume. This time there was no need for a mermaid costume. A monster costume was in order. What do you know; I found it right off the bat. Shopping early pays off.

Remember all you parents out there; look for Halloween costumes early on. The early bird always gets the worm. So if a mermaid costume is on the list, it's time to start surfing that web. Then you shall have one happy little trick-or-treater.
