Grim Reaper Costume 04 Au Gift

I really love Halloween. I would have to say that of all holidays, it is my favorite. I love it better than Christmas, New Year's, my birthday, and Thanksgiving combined. Every year, I assemble a different costume from scratch. Last year I was a witch. A few years before that, I was one of my favorite fictitious characters. Yet there is one constant that keeps cropping up every few years: my Grim Reaper costume.

There are all kinds of different pictures of reaper. You see, every culture and every person imagines death a little bit differently. This is a great thing for people who like Grim Reaper costumes. After all, you can do it differently every time. My last Grim Reaper costume borrowed heavily from Ingmar Bergman. Rather than having the heavy cowl that completely obscured my face or the death mask, instead I had white face paint and a more moderately sized cowl. People could see my face, and I kept that cold, stoic expression that was so famous in the movie The Seventh Seal. In previous years, however, I was a little bit more extravagant with my Grim Reaper costume.

For the one I did in college, for example, I went all out. It was the perfect Grim Reaper outfit. I had my face made up to look like it was rotting, bones painted over my arms, and had a huge, imposing robe. People would only see glimpses of my make up underneath, but those glimpses were terrifying. It looked like I really was death, hidden under a heavy cowl. One of my friends told me that, although she had seen many different Grim Reaper costumes, mine was the very best. This was a great complement from her, as she worked in the film business.

If you want a Grim Reaper costume of your own, you can do it pretty simply. Basically, all you need for a Grim Reaper costume is a cloak and a scythe. Everything else is optional - even the face paint. After all, if the cloak is heavy enough, no one will see your face! After that, any touches that you want to add to make you look more deathly are always welcome. You can surround your eyes with dark circles, paint your face white, hang a clock around your neck, or speak in a spooky voice all evening. You can even get one of those voice changers and use it to make your own voice more sinister. Just use your imagination!

Do you have one child that challenges you more than your other children? I do. I have three children, two sons and a daughter. My daughter is the middle child and has always been very creative. This is a good thing and will most likely be an asset for her as an adult; however as a child it means that she demands more attention and time. Not only does she make unique requests, but she also wants to be involved in fulfilling them.

When she was ten years old we went to see a production of the Christmas Carol at one of the metropolitan theaters. The production was excellent; it was a great family outing. After we saw the production she wanted to have a copy of the book. We bought this for her as a stocking stuffer for Christmas that year. In the copy of the book the illustration of the ghost from things yet to come was drawn in the classic grim reaper costume. She decided as soon as she saw the illustration that this is what she wanted to be for Halloween the next year. I did not look for a grim reaper costume because my thought was that she would change her mind several times in the ten months before Halloween came around. The month before Halloween she was still insistent that she wanted a grim reaper costume. My thought was to use black material that we could drape and pin around her, however she wanted the hood and she wanted a way to wear it so she could see, but no one could see her face.

There were grim reaper costumes available for adults so I bought her one and we shortened it so that she could walk without having to hold it up. There was a large hood on the costume, but you could still see her face. I looked for black sheer fabric that we could sew into the hood, but all the pieces I found were either so sheer that you could still see her face or they were too opaque to see through. I bought the sheer fabric as well as black face paint. I sewed the fabric into the hood several inches back from the edge and then we painted her face black. This worked great because when you looked at her you had no idea of who it was. We also painted her hands white so they had a ghostly appearance. She was going to a party at a neighbor's house. I sewed Velcro around the sheer material so that she would be able to pull it away from her face in order to eat and drink. Throughout all of the construction of the costume she was in the room with me making sure that it was exactly how she wanted it. She wants to learn to sew so that she will be able to make her own costumes in the future. I am sure they will turn out great because she is a perfectionist.

Is it that time of year again? Be careful! You don't want to take that wrong turn on that dark, deserted street. God knows what's down there. After all, this is the night when the monsters and spirits have the ability to frolic about just like us. You've heard the stories, right? There is but one night of the year when all bets are off. It's commonly known as Halloween. Are you prepared for a frightening evening of witches, ghouls, demons and ghosts? What am I babbling about? Of course you are. Regardless of the infinite tales you've heard about "All Hallows Eve," we all know that it's a wonderful night of trickery, sweets, and just plain old fun. In fact, many of us anticipate its arrival like no other. There's just something about a day when looking normal is out of the question. All I know is that on that spooky night when the little ones come a knocking, I like to be prepared with a plethora of candy, treats and Halloween baskets to please any tiny monster or ghoul.

Have you ever taken the time to create Halloween baskets? We love doing this sort of thing at my house. There's just something about getting into the holiday spirit. I believe that more people should try and do so. It really does make the occasion much more fun. A few years back my wife and I decided to do something a little more unique and creative on Halloween. This was the beginning of Halloween baskets for us. Now, just so you don't get the wrong idea, they're not anything fancy. In fact, their just inexpensive little Halloween baskets stuffed with candy. This way you give each and every trick-or-treater a variety of sweets. Trust me; the little ones love it. You surely remember what it was like back in the day when you went trick-or-treating. You'd get all fixed up in that perfect costume and head out with candy on the brain. From door to door you were always hoping for the absolute best treats around. I'm talking about the fancy Halloween baskets or the whole candy bars. Not the "fun size" either. I'm talking about the big ones. We all loved getting those. So are you ready to create some fun and exciting Halloween baskets this year? You know that special day will be rolling around soon. Whatever you do, don't be that ridiculous neighbor who passes out fruit or raisins.
